                                   BOOTCAMP?            FOR?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. I haven't been exercising much lately. Is it still a good idea to start coming to the classes.
A. That depends - do you want to get fitter and healthier, more able, mobile and flexible? If so, and if you're prepared to commit to a few lifestyle changes - then that's a big YES to bootcamps. We accommodate a range of fitness and ability levels so you don't have to feel left out or overwhelmed. The one consideration is if something on your exercise screening form requires closer attention, or you don't yet have your doctor's clearance (if needed).

Q. What happens if it's raining? (or cold, dark, misty etc)
A. Your heart, lungs and muscles don't see the weather, nor does your long term health. Classes run rain or shine, and often before sun-up or sun-down. Classes will only not run due to the major public holidays, and natural catastrophe.
For peace of mind - the park is well lit at all times. There is shelter beneath the trees that we can utilise if it gets REALLY wet. Otherwise intermittent rain you'll barely notice whilst exercising.

Q. But it's cold in the morning and night! Surely that's no good (and my quilt looks much nicer)...
A. Once again it depends on what you want. If you want to get the fittest, strongest, fastest and healthiest you've ever been - then cold won't matter a jot. Besides, once you've done more than 3 minutes of exercise you won't even notice it. We live in Sydney after all, not the snowies. Exercising in the cool is the BEST temperature range when doing exertive exercise, since it's far easier for your body to maintain its temperature (who enjoys exercising in 30-40 degrees?). Stuff your quilt. It can wait.

Q. What is the 'Express' class?
A. Express classes are 45 mins of more intense exercise with less rest - kind of like condensing an hour - so that you can get to the park and get back home again quick yet still get ALL the same benefits as the hour sessions.
Q. Why is it the same price as hour classes?
A. See the answer above. Your body gets the same results, but faster. Just be prepared to not rest as much!

Q. I run marathons. What can your bootcamp give me?
A. Congratulations - that's an awesome achievement! Now do you do any kind of strengthening for upper body, core or lower body stabilisers? How about flexibility work? Or perhaps the chance to interact with a bunch of other friendly locals? Outdoor training in groups gives you a more rounded approach to health, which can actually supplement your own training.

Q. I already go to the gym and do weights. Will bootcamps make me bigger/smaller and counteract weight training?
A. Outdoor training by dint of the fact there's less equipment, means you are working more with your bodyweight than in a gym which has machines and weights. You can bet that group outdoor training though will lead to improvements in all functional movements - like the lunge, squat, core stability, rotational movements etc. You can certainly supplement weight training with outdoor training since you'll improve your cardiorespiratory health too (your heart and lungs are muscles, too). And metabolically, the fitness benefits of cross training like bootcamps, leads to a higher ratio of fat to carbohydrate (and protein) burning. Meaning ultimately - whether your goal is to get bigger muscles or smaller fat stores - bootcamps help.

Q. I'm registering for 3 (or 5) sessions per week for this coming bootcamp. What if I can't make all morning sessions or all evening sessions?
A. You can attend any session up to the number of sessions you've paid for each week - so any combination of morning, express or evening classes. Just give us 24 hours' notice of changes to your normal attendance so we can prepare for the change in class numbers (equipment, trainers etc).

Q. What if I miss a class one week?
A. You can still make it up if you drop us a line within 24 hours of missing one, to let us know when you can attend another class within the following week. If you don't make up your class within the week from another class, you forfeit that session.

Q. Can I choose when my 12 sessions are over any length of time?
A. No. We know from experience and any number of scientific studies that exercise is most beneficial done at least 2-3 times a week, no less. That's why our classes are offered as 3 or 5 sessions a week. You need to be able to commit to your own health and fitness and make the changes necessary to make those sessions each week during your training block.

Q. Do you do casual visits?
A. No. For the same reasons as above - plus at Life Active we are looking to work with people who are going to get results because they commit to themselves. Seriously, one casual visit will be nice but means little unless it's part of a structured, bigger program. Which is why the exception is Life Active's personal training clients, who may attend one bootcamp class free each week for each paid personal training session. See www.lifeactive.com.au if you are interested in taking some personal training to accelerate your results.

Q. Do classes vary from day to day?
A. Yes - there is an underlying structure to all the bootcamp classes, with a different focus each day of the week. Classes on the same day (eg the 6 am and 6 pm) will focus on the same things, though two classes will never quite be the same. The classes build each week too from the first week to the fourth.

Q. What's with the exercise screening form?
A. At Life Active we understand that whilst exercise benefits everyone, everywhere - the type of exercise that benefits one person might be dangerous to someone with medical conditions or injuries. We don't want to assume you are healthy until you tell us so explicitly. If you are unsure about anything on the form let us know.

Q. What's with the nutrition seminar? Do I have to come? I already know enough.
A. Short answer - yes you do have to. Well, no-one will force you but it's a fantastic opportunity to come and learn something new or be inspired to think about your health and nutrition in a different way. We tend to get set in our normal eating habits without actually being aware of them, so it's good to get a nudge once in a while. And there is just no way you will achieve best health without nutritional 'nudging'. Besides, it's being run specifically for you and your fellow bootcampers so come along and support not only your health journey, but theirs too.
It ain't like a normal seminar either!
